About Us

New Norfolk Gunshop commenced some fifteen years ago when Ray Williams, the owner of a New Norfolk hardware store decided to add a half a dozen firearms to the family hardware store.

From these small beginnings and after two years a move to the owners residence at 14 Circle Street was made where New Norfolk Timber and New Norfolk Ammunition was commenced and run for several years.

Around 2000 the timber and ammunition business both moved to 27 Stephens Street New Norfolk and whilst the New Norfolk Timber business remains at that location the now named New Norfolk Gunshop moved in March 2010 to the latest address at 43 High Street New Norfolk opposite the Post Office and along side of the family Mitre 10 Store.

Ray is a country born and bred Victorian who worked for the National Bank of Australasia between 1966 and 1988 and over that time served in many country towns throughout Victoria and Tasmania thus enabling him to follow his great love of hunting and inland fishing throughout these two states.

Since leaving the Bank and commencing the family hardware business in New Norfolk over twenty years ago Ray has developed a close association with the local Derwent Valley Field and Game Club plus been on Hobart Gun Club, Metropolitan Gun Club and Mersey Clay Target Club Committees in earlier years.

One of the most rewarding achievements to date has been to act as mentor and coach over the past few years to The Hutchins Sports Shooting Team and some of the students through this program are showing great ability and this is wonderful for all the right reasons.

On another subject a lifelong ambition was realized in October of 2008 when on a hardware business trip to England Ray had a look through the famous Purdey, Holland and Holland, William Evans and Beretta gunshops and this of course was a very interesting experience to see the most expensive firearms that money can buy.

Also on this trip met up with a well known and respected gun fitter Chris Batha who was an excellent person and once again to have a gun fit in England by someone like Chris Batha is in itself something that most shotgun owners would love to do.
